The Panama Hotel Affair.
Walter Lane was charged at the Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, before Messi 1 * 0. Lackman and L. L. Harris, Justices, with having been found on the premises oi the Panama Hotel without lawful excuse, with intent to commit a felony, on the 25th April. The circumstances of the case have already been published, and nothing fresh transpired during the hearing of the case. Miss McCarthy and Miss Crimmins related how they locked the door of their bedroom when retiring on the night in question, and how they were disturbed in the early morning and saw a man, whom they identified as the accused, in the room. On their calling out he went outside, and locked the door after him. They opened the window and by their screams attracted the attention of two men — Grigg and Young—compositors on the New Zealand Times, who, seeing accused trying to climb over the side gate, collared him and held him fast till the police arrived. The keys, which we have previously referred to as having been found by Grigg in his overcoat pocket, were identified by Miss McCarthy as her property, which she said she had left in her dress pocket on retiring to rest. These were all the main facts of the case, after hearing which the Bench committed accused for trial, bail being fixed atone personal surety of £100, and two of £50 each.— N.Z. Times.
