Kepler, the grtat astronomer was the first ganger. He it was invented the science of excise. On the\jO6casion of his second marriage he found it necessary to stock his cellars "with a few casks of wine. When the wine merchant came to measure the casks, the astronomer objected to his method as he had made no allowance for the different sizes of the bulging parts of the cask. As the merchant, did

not know any other mode of procedure and calculation, Kepler was led to study the subject for himself, and wrote a treatise on it which was published in 1615, and which contains the essential principles of the modern system.
