The Blizzard.
The northern portion of the United States has again experienced the awful effects of a'< Blizzard ". The mil way cars have been blown off the lines and fifty persons frozen to death. Blizzard or norther is an Americanism signifying a "poser" and a description of such a storm allows how apt the name is. The Blizzard ia a snow storm accompanied with a furious gale which pulverises the snow into particles like dusfc which makes seeing or moving an impossibility, and all caught away from shelter are generally (lead before the storm has ceased. In January 1888 the North West portion of the United States was visited by a blizzard in which 235 persons perishod and many head of stock. Again in March of the same year the Eastern coast was desolated by a blizzard from the North West, and communication between New York, Philadelphia, and Boston was suspended. Great loss of life, some 400, and property, occurred, and food rose to famine prices. The storm, we • are informed extends from the state of Michigan, which is divided from Canada by lakes Huron and Michigan, to Montana which also separated from the west coast by a small portion of the State of Indaho, and the whole of Washington State. Blizzards are experienced in Canada also with much force, but we hear less about them owing to the country being less thickly settled. It may be interesting to note that the State of Manitoba, which the Government of the Dominion of Canada are so freely giving away land to settlers, bounds the State of North Dakota, which lies in the storm route between Michigan and Montana.
