The Duke of Cumberland.
Kino Geohge I was son of the Elector of Hanover and his descendants known as George II and George the 111 retained possession of that state. On the accession of Queen Viotoria the crown of Hanover passed to her uncle Ernest, Duke of Cumberland. The third Duke of Cumberland, was borne in 1845 and has lived to see his State seized by the Prussians who in 1886 extinguished the Monarchy. There is a large sum of money in the German's hands known as the Guelph Fund, being receipts from this stolen territory. Many attempts have been made to make a refund of the amount to the rightful owners, but always with the provise that ali claim to ! the Crowu is abandoned. Till quite lately this has been refused, but our I latest cablegrams inform us that the Duke of Cumberland is prepared to receive his share of the interest on this fund and to agree to the conditions imposed if the Germans will recognise his heir, George William born in 1880, as Duke of Brans* ■ wick. The Duchy cf Brunswick is a j State of Northern Germany con sist - j ing chiefly of three detached parts, ! comprising an area of 1441 square miles, and a population of 400,000 nearly all of whom are Protestants. The English Royal Family are interested in more ot these Small German States, as the Duke of Edinburgh is the heir presumptive to the throne of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
