Tlie attention of tlie Members and the General Public is called to some of the special features connected with the Society, which is th« oldest Colonial Institution of its kind, baying been established in the yeai 1849. The results of the business for the Forty-first year, ending 31st December, 1889, may be summarised as under :— Fibst — The number of the new policies issued was 11,664. Second— The new A. suranco business effected was for £8,679,459. Third — Tho new Annual Premium Income amounted to £121,800. Fourth — The net increase to the business, after allowing for loss oi income from terminated Policies, was represented by 7028 polioies,assuring _]2,109,199. Fifth — Tho operations ofthe yeai raised the animal income of the Bociety from £1 512,280 to £1,625---185. an increase in twelve montha of £112,905. -ixth — '' he accumulated fond was increased during the year by the sura of £742,811, equal to 71 pel cent; of the gross premiums received. Seventh — The deaths among lives assured were 649 under 785 policies causing claims upon tho Societj amounting to £299,602 irrespective of Bonus additions, while the number expected according to the Tables used in estimating the liabilities would have been 1143, for ar amount of £488,976, the mortality experience "being thus extremel) favourable. Eighth — The receipts from interest and rents were £516,832, ac amount exceeding the sum paid foi tbe c'aims by £188,952. Ninth— The expenses of management were only 9.5 per cent, of the total receipts. Tenth — The cash surplus divided for the year 1889 was £426,494 being at the rate of 41.5 percent, or the premiums roceived. The operations of the Society dur ing the 41 years of its existence ma] he summarised as under — It has issued 141,80T policies, as suring £49,4X7,717. It has paid to the representatives of de een. Ed members over £4,000,< 000 in satisfaction of death auc matured claim. . I It has divided among the members casl bonuses aggregating over £4,> 000,000, yielding reversion i.ry additions of over £S<ooo,< 000.
