Manawatu County Council.

—♦ ■ - The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held at the County Office, Sanson, yesterday at 11 a.m. Present — The Chairman (V. C. Ransom) Crs Hammond, Robinson, Mitchell, McKenzie and Masters. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was read. INWARDS. The Treasury forwarding account for interest on loans. Same, asking for £8 19s lOd being charges paid on behalf of the Counoil for bridge enquiries to H. \V. Brabant, (Awahuri bridge), £3 2s lid H. McKenzie, clerical assistance 12s G. Woodroofe, hire hall 4s sd. Property Tax sending voucher for payment of £81 19s 4d for Native lands. Horowhenua County forwarding following resolutions, " That the j offer of the Manawatu County Council as contained in letter of 9th February to pay this Council the sum of £115 6s 4d be accepted and that amount be taken as payment in full '

Same, stating that the County was now in the Palmersfcon district and application shouid be made to that Board for the order re David Young's admission to the Sanatorium at Rotorua. Charlotte Scott stating her willingness to conduct the ferry on the same terms as the late Mr Scott did. Same, asking permission to lay the punt up for 9 or 30 days for repair. Rowe & > c ons, asking for the piece of road from the Foxton road to their mill to be metalled. .^ J. H. Luxford, asking that the public road through Native land (lately held by Mr Peppin) be defined. G. H. Lucas calling attention to the gutter opposite his gate, and offering to put in culvert if timber is supplied. McMillan, Ehodes & Co, applying for £4 for compensation for loss of land on sections 88 and 89, Motoa, taken for a road. J. H. Hankins detailing deeds forwarded. J. Wright Stewait, asking for a balance of £15 on account of endea< vouring to sell the tramway. Railway Department, stating question of hire of waggons for ballasting of charges has been referred to the Commissioners. ' Same, telegram, stating Department cannot spare ballast trucks, present unable to meet own orders. Barber Bros., sending cheque for £124 2s 6d for rates. They pointed out that 1000 acres should be deducted as the Natives had resumed occupation of that area, and asking that they be not charged for this next year. C. Dunk, sending cheque for rates, but protesting "against this extra* ordinary rate." The two sections of land cost 45s an acre aboi\t 12 months ago and he was k rated at 100s. He thought there must have been a mistake made. F. S. Bassett, applying for a re« newal of his slaughtering license. I. White, declining to take up W^v contract on Campbelltown road as he had other work in hand. John Carmody, stating that he did not intend to enter upon his contract for metalling on Camp.belltownLongburn road, as there is not sufficient metal in the pit. . J. Dalton, applying for permission to cut flax on Sanson to Awahuri, and Awahuri to Feilding roads, and offering Is per ton royalty. G. Pyke, calling attention to the road alongside Mr Brook', his, and other properties, which is impassable in winter. W, L. Luxiord, forwarding prices of pipes. John Anderson, offering to metal 10 chains of road on Taylor's road, on which he is drawing metal. If agreed to he would do it very low and repair after he finished. >: Baker & Cooke, making'application for compensation to McAlister for detention from want of trucks, or to permit him to abandon his contract. OUTWARDS. Colonial Treaswer, sending interest on loans. • Charitable Aid, asking for an order for David Young's admission to the Sanatorium at Rotorua. C. Dunk, re valuation. There was a block of 10,000 acres on the Oroua Down's estate valued at £4 an acre, and it had to be apportioned to purchasers. Railway Department, asking for trucks. Town Clerk, Foxton, asking for cheque for interest. J. McLennan, asking him to register dogs at his office. Barber Bros., regarding the 1000 acres that Natives had resumed, pointed out that the new valuation was made this year and requesting him to see if it was correct. In reference to Mr Luxford's, application, the Overseer reported that he was at Orona bridge withj|[r Alzdorf last Friday- 'They fould that near where Mr Cooper had a bridge the road crossed the main drain, and further on crossed another

drain further up, and still further it cropjed the main drain twice. They found the ftew pegs on the roads that xiad been put in by the station but 'the old government pegs were not to be found. The Overseer expected fcbo bridges would cost £30 each. The matter was left until the Overseer aould go over the line since it had been defined "Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Cr McKenzie, That the ! clerk copy agreement to work tho ! Rangifcikei ferry that the Coun<?' had with the late Mr Scott and Mrs Scott be asked to sign the same ; and that Mrs. Scott be asked to name .some competent person to work the ferry and submit the same toCouneil for their approval. Proposed by Cr Mitchell, seconded by Cr Robinson, That tenders be invited for the purchase of the old punt and. gear formerly used at the Shannon ferry. To be advertised in the Manawatu Times and Manawatu Hbbald. Tenders to be in by next meeting of this Council. Proposed by Cr McKenzie, seconded by the Chairman, That the Secretary of tba Pivlmersfcon Charitable Aid Board be asked for an order to admit, David Young to the Sanatorium at Rotorua. Proposed by Cr McKenjzie, seconded by Or Hammond, That Mr Dalton be offered the right to cut all flax on the Fielding Awahuri, and the Awahuri Sanson roads for the sum of £1 prepaid. All flax to be cut within 3 months. Proposed by Cr McKenzie, seconded by the Chairman, That the Overseer be instructed to arrange with John Anderson to metal from 10 to 20 chains on Taylor's line. Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Cr McKenzie, That the clerk write to R. 0. Clark pipe manufacturer at Auckland ' for prices of pipes delivered at Wanganui or Foxton or both. If price satisfactory engineer to order £50 worth of the kinds he requires at qnce. John McAlister appeared in explanation »of his letter from Messrs Baker and Cooke. He said he wanted compensation for the time he lost waiting for the trucks. He was of opinion that the Council undertook to find the trucks. He had not spokan to Brooks about the trucks. He did not desire to answer whether he had made any arrangements with Brooks before he sent in his contract. He believed he could oompel Brooks to bring any number of trucks he pleased. He had been put to considerable loss and might be put back 6 weeks with his job. He had been delayed a fortu night. He certainly had not had his teams on the job. Since Monday however some teams had been on the ground. The Chairman asked Mr McAlister in what manner and to what amount he considered he had made a loss, and in reply Mr McAlister asked for time to make out the items. Mr McAlister then retired. The following tenders were opened ; — Campbelltown Longburn road — J. Stewart, £1 14s 3d per chain ; R. Bowler, jr., £1 15s ; J. J. Goodwin, £1 19s; Holland and Rogers, £1 >12s B£d ; T. Fraser, £1 18s 6d ; A. Peebles, jr., £1 16s 6d ; Gordon & Morris, £1 15s 9d. Bulls Feilding road— Gordon & Morris, £1 ss. Wilson's Line— T. Fraser, £1 4s per chain ; G. Coyle, £1 4s gd ; J. Anderson, 17s. Shannon road— J. Stewart, £8 8s 6d per chain ; J. T. Wells, £4 12s ; E. Ashby, £3 9s 6d.; T. Cook, £3. Cattle Yards— J. Hillary, £20 ; 0. M. itfehards, £28 17s 4d. Proposed by Cr McKenzie, seconded by Cr Robinson, That the followiner tenders be accepted : — Holland & Rogers for metalling 145 chains on Campbelltown-Longburn road at £1 12s 8-Jd per chain ; J. Anderson, for metalling 84 chains on Bulls-Feilding line at 17s per chain; T. Cook, for formation on Bounders' road at £3 per chain ; J. Hillary, for erecting yards at Shan* non at £20. Mr MoAlister again waited on the Council with a statement of claim he considered he had against the Counoil. He afterwards discovered that the amount he had put in was not to the purpose, having misunderstood what was wanted. He reckoned that he expected to make on his two contracts £150 as well as wages. If the Council would allow him £250 he was prepared to settle with them. He was not going to make any arrangement with Brooks about the trucks. The Chairman said that the Council would consult and reply to him further on. Mr McAlister then retired. Proposed by Cr McKenzie, seconded by Cr Kobinson, That the Chairman and Crs Hammond and Masters be a .committee to deal with the matter of Messrs Baker and Cooke's letter of the Bth mat. Or Masters said he had to send a man to the Awahuri bridge the other day to make repairs. The Chairman said that the Chairman of the Manawatu Board had informed him that he had ordered timber to redeck the whole bridge. Cr Mitchell moved, That J. H. Horikins be instructed to take steps to have work completed re exchango of roads on Motoa estate at once. H« thought that Mr Hanking should

be authorised to put on another survey or to do the work. Cr Robinson seconded, and on being put to the meeting was carried. Proposed by Cr Mitchell, seconded by Cr Hammond, That the Overseer b iv. tructed to call for tender for cl /■< ur about 40 chain 3of the Fox-ton-bLnmon road. Tenders to be in by noon of the 23rd March, to be 1 ue do with by a committee. Proposed by Cr McKenzie, seconded by Cr Hammond, That the Overseer be instructed to call for tenders for 1350 yards of metal in accordance with his report ; to trim Campion's line and carry out other | works shown to be necessary by his report. The usual number of accounts were passed for payment.
