Mr Combe, the Conservative candidate for the seat of Chertsey, rendered vacant by the death of Mr P. A. Hankey, ha 9 been returned by a majority of 1888 over Mr Barker, the Liberal representative. The election for the vacant seat of Derbyshire South, caused by the death of Mr H Wardle, resuJted in the return of Mr Broad, the Home Bule candidate, by a majority of 1250. The House df Commons by a majority of 98 voted a sum of £20,---000 for carrying out the survey of the railway route from Mombassa to Lake Victoria Nyanza. Mr Gladstone opposed the vote, fearing that if the object was carried out it would lead to war with the natives. Shipbuilding aqd other yards continue to dismiss hands, the owners refusing to pay panic prices for coal, which has advauced a further Is 6d per ton.
