Canadian Railways.

The inhabitants of the Domipipn of Canada have been of late yMrs going heavily into railway formation, attended with the usual terrible waste of money, the proof of which has been shown up in the evsence taken before a Royal Comniis^si, which has affected the position of many politicians. The paisfe?o!ar Baie-Chaleur railway, with , which the Bon Honore Merciei'i the' Premier of Quebec, is unpleasantly associated torn having, out of its capital, secured a country seat, runs from Nova Scotia, by Charlottetown, by the bay of Chaleur, over the Notre Dame mountains to the river St Lawrence, and thence by the bank of that river to Montreal. In 1878 the Dominion had 6,148 miles of railway opened,, and in the twelve following, in 1890 there were 14,004 miles of railway. The chief line is the Canadian Pacific; which starts from Quebec and endSjfit Vancouver on the Pacific oceahl ,Tne main line from Montreal tb; Vanconver is 2906 miles in dist^ttce, but with its branches the Canadian Pacific system is 4,973 miles. The survey of a route has also been completed for a line which it is proposed to make, 650 miles long, between the city of Winnipeg and Hudson's Bay. Some idea of the extent and value of the Canadian railway system may be gleaned from the following statistics for the year ended 80th June 1890 given in Whitaker's Almanack :— Paid up capital 786,447,812 dollars. Mileage in operation 13,256; mileage completed 14,004 ; passengers carried 12.821,262 ; tons of freight parried 20,787,469.
