Long Beach.
— . "♦ We gave some interesting particulars as to the cropping for the past year upon this valuable estate. In a letter to Mr Wright. M.H.R., for Ashburton, Mr Grigg pointed out that the Government pretend to desire the employment of the people and the occupation of the land, and yet devise a scheme the tendency of which is to obstruct both one and the other. On his estate, Mr .Qrigg . said that on the 16,000 acres farmed the improvements were from £75,000 to £-100,0i>0, and upon the land he had sold £22,000. Within the last three years he has laid dawp 100 mites of drain pipes ; tie has contributed to the railway revenue in 1889, £4788 ; in 1890, £4111 ; and in 1891 £4561. He employs on an average one man to every hundred acres throughout^ the year, and they place in ; the Savingsbank more than £5000 a year. Under the property tax he had to pay some £554 a year, under the ' Land Tax he will have ,to pay £888 ! This is the way others are encouraged to go and do likewise. I ■
