CONDENSED CABLEGRAMS.
London. A Pacific Islands syndicate, with a capital of £500,000, has been registered. The Earl of Albemarle and Mr J. S. Balfour, M.P. for Burnley, are among the directors. The com-, pany will acquire mineral rights of land, will grow fruit, and operate in explorations of mercantile business in the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, and elsewhere. Messrs John Higgmson and Joseph Ebbsmith are the managing directors; '1 he report that Kaiser Wilhelm's Land in German New Guinea is unfit for European colonists is confirmed. It is reported that the officials are all dying off. The French have extended their authority over the Tuat Oasis south of Algeria. Caravans are now being taken under their protection. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following cablegram, dated London, 16th instant:—"Wool — The sales progress firmly, but there is much irregularity in the bidding. Quotations are unchanged since last telegram, except for superior greasy merino, for which the market is easier. The American demand is limited. The total quantity catalogued to date is 248,000 bales. Total quantity withdrawn, 22,000 bales. The Durham coal owners have given their employe's a fortnight's notice. Sixteen thousand engineers on the Tyne and Wear are out on strike. Many dissentients in the ranks of the coal miners are resuming work
