London. General Booth has selected Cape Colony for his over-sea settlement. The amendment moved by Mr T. Sexton in the House of Commons, in connection with the failure of the Irish Land Purchase Act, further declares the inability of the Imperial Parliament to legislate lor Ireland. The Opposition support the amend, nient. The I'arnellites will not elect a chairman, out of. respect to the memory of their late leader. The import of cattle from Denmark is prohibited. In the House of Commons Mr Balfour moved th it Mr De Cobain be required to attend in his place on February 28. He declined to afford any protection to him pending a statement upon the charges against him. In the House of Commons, Mr Chamberlain, in a brilliant speech, attacked Mr Gladstone's tactics, which he declared were full of menace and bluster. Sir W. V Harcourt declined to support the amendment to the Address-in- Reply moved by Mr Redmond for an amnesty to political prisoners. The amendment, which was nega-. tived by a large majority, was supported by under 40 of the Gladstone Party. Mrs Osborue has been committsd for trial lor perjury and larceny. During the examination of Mrs Hargreayes in the charge of larceny and perjury against Mrs Osborne she evinced much sympathy with the accused and subsequently visited her in prison. There if? increased firmness in the wheat market, but the prices are unchanged. A general rise of £d per lb has taken place in New Zealand frozen mutton, and lamb is quoted at 6d. New Zealand hemp is in moderate demand at previous rates. The butter market is steadier. A consignment, .ex Aoraugi, fetched from 86s to 112s per cwt. H M.S. Victoria, which went ashore near Platea, on the .Greek coast, and subsequently, floated off, has arrived at Malta. General Booth states that the terms offered in New Zealand for the establishment of his oversea colonies were easier than those of Cape Colony, but the distance barred their acceptance.
