Manukau.

♦ (from our own correspondent.) It is now some time since I sent you any notes, partly through absence from the place and partly because passing events were scarcely of sufficent interest to chronicle. A meeting was held in the schoolroom last week to consider the advisability of merging the Road Boards into the County Council. Mr W. Tompsitt, chairman of the Otaki Road Board and a member of the County Council occupied the chair. Mr Kebbell in a speech similar to the one published by you in your report of the Shannon meeting pointed out the advantages of merging the Boards. Mr Carkeek criticised the actions of the, County Council in the past, and moved as an amendment that the time is not yet ripe for the merging of the Board. The meeting broke up without anything being very clear as to what the wishes of the meeting were, as Mr Kebbell's motion and the amendment were both apparently lost. However so far as I could see there seemed to be a pretty equal number for and against the proposal. Most of the settlers have already burned their bush. In nearly every case the burn has been a great success. Taken all round it has been a much more successful season than any we have had for some time. Properties are still changing hands, I have heard several prospective sales, but am not yet at liberty to mention names. A rifle match took place at Otaki on Saturday among the members of the club, for the " Simcox Challenge Cup." Mr Bennett, of Manakau came out winner with 84 points. The scores also counted against the Petone Club, who proved winners by 36 points. The latest event of social interest has been the marriage of Mr Robert Bevan, fourth son of Mr T. Bevan, one of the oldest settlers on the coast to Miss Greatbatch of Featherstou, Wairarapa. The happy couple were welcomed by a large gathering of friends at the house of the Bridegroom's father, where a pleasant evening was spent.
