Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, JAN. 16, 1892. Two Princes.

On Thursday last, two Princes went to their last home. One was a young man, the prince of the Courts, the other an aged man, the prince of the hurch. r:t eight o'clock Cardinal Manning breathed his last. In his early days he was a member of the Anglican Church, but over fifty two years ago he*changed. In 1866 he was consecrated Archbishop, and ■was made Cardinal in 1875. He ■was active in all good works and goes to his grave revered by all. One hour after the Cardinal died, the Prince of Wales's eldest son, the Duke of Clarence and Avondale, died, after but a few days illness. The unexpected serious turn the young Duke's illness took 1 on the day previous to his death, created intense

excitement in all England,* and much sympathy throughout Europe was shown to the Royal Family. The 1 Duke of Clarence was born in 1864 and wa*s on the eve of a marriage with a daughter of the Duke of Teck, and many valuable presents had already been sent. One sudden blow has ended these hopes, and we can only trust that the affliction visited upon his parents and family will be received with trne Christain resignation. From this small dependency of England the most heartfelt sympathy will be felt, and an earnest wish expressed that the mourners may be comforted inthis hour of their trial.

The' second son, now the heirapparent is Prince George, who is a lieutenant in the Royal Navy. He was born in 1865. The eldest daughter is the Duchess of Fife, and there are' two unmarried daughters, the princesses Victoria, and Maud, and one other son, Alexander, who was born in 1871.
