ARTESIAN WELLS.
(to the editob op the junawato hkbald.) Sir,— According to the Manawatu Times ■ most of the artesian wella on the Kairansra have become dry. The settlers attribute this to the late earthquake, and no doubt this 18 oorraot. I may here state for the inform itio.i of those who hive artesian / wells that this is caused by the earth or I grave! fa ling in round the bottom of the pipe. In driving for artesian water, after wat°r is struck there is a pond or caviw formed at the bottom of the pipe by ML. sand and small gravel being forced ud Bfc pipe by the flow of water to the a lrtt^^L. The shock of an eai.thqu ke causes I^B earth and gravel to fall to the bottom M^ around the pipe, and so disp^es the water which prevents an upward flow. Th« remedy i* to drive the pipe f urt her down ti 1 fresh water is struck.- 1 am; 'afc Gtoww' Nw,
