It has been made public that two years ago, when a committee of the House of Commons sat to consider the question of endowing the grandchildren of the Queen, they were informed under a pledge of secresy, of the total value of Her Majesty's investments, and the amount is stated to be surprisingly small.
The Prince of Wales' income is stated to be £110,000 a year, to which may be added the £10,00 a' year voted to the Princess. A separate provision is also made for his children. Marlborough House, just opposite to St. James 1 Palace, is also kept up at the public cost,
The uses made of the refuse of Paris streets are numerous. Little wisps of women's hair are carefully up^ ravel ed and do duty for false hair \ifll and-bye. Men's hair collected out*side the barbers' shop serves for filters throught which syrups are strained ; bits of sponge are cut up and used for spirit lamps ; bits of bread, if dirty, are toasted and grated and sold to the restaurants for spread* ing on hams or cutlets : sometimes they are carbonized and made into tooth powder. All this work employ^P* a regiment of ragpickers numbering close on to 20,000, and each earninyfrora 20 pence to half a crown a day.
