Foxton Borough Council.
The usual meeting of the above Council was held at 2.30 p.m. yesterday at the Library Buildings.
Present— The Mayor (G. Nye), Crs. McMillan, Austin, Hillary, Williams, Stansell and Startup.
Cr. Startup made the usual declaration previous to taking his seat.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed
The Mayor mentioned that the.re was no quorum on the date the dog tax tendei-s were received, and though opened were not dealt with. The tenders were P. Guerin Is per dog, and Phillip Williams lid per dog.
It was proposed by Cr. McMillan, seconded by Cr. Austin -That the tender of P. Williams be accepted for collecting the dog tax for the year 1892 at eleven pence per dog. Carried.
The Clerk read the following letter from John Anderson that he would agree to cart 250 yards metal, more or less, after completion of present contract for the sum of 2s 9d per yard. Cr. Williams proposed, and Cr. Stansell seconded— That Anderson's offer be accepted to supply a further quantity of gravel at 2s 9d per yard, say 250 yards more orless. Carried.
Proposed by the Mayor, .seconded by Cr. Williams— That Thomas F. Gibson make the valuation of the Borough of Foxton for the year 1892-93. Carried.
Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Williams — That two wells be sunk for water supply, one at the top of Main-street, and one at the bottom, at the junction of Motoa road, for the use of the general public, the work to be put in hand as soon as funds are available. Carried.
Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by O. Stansell— That the Clerk order 200 feet of heart of totara for making 200 pegs. Also a set of branding irons for branding pegs for the use of cemetery, for old and new sites, and that A. Jonson be employed to make, paint, brand a>d fix said pegs when required. The work to be carried out at once. Carried
Cr Williams proposed Cr Stansell seconded That Andrew Tohnson be appointed Sexton for the ensuing year. Cr Williams said he knew several Councillors did not understand the position. In the old days Mr -lonson used to do the work for nothing. A few years ago, times got better and he i hen rcce ved a salaiy. Mr Jonson when he became a Councillor, moved that Mr Spring be appointed Sexton in his place under the idea that when he retired, Mr Spring would resign in his favour. He looked upon Mr Johnson as a man who had always done his duty.
Cr McMillan thought the Council should hear the other parties. Mr Spring was appointed during the pleasure of the Council.
Cr Austin that Mr Jonson had a grievance and buttonholed Councillors about it. Everything that is required to be done has been done by Mr Spring. He thought we should not do right to shunt the present s-exton.
Cr. Startup thought nothing had
been shown to prove that Mr Spring had made such an arrangement. He thou?ht Mr Jonson had not treated the C mncil properly when they had anplied to him about particulars re the cemetery some few months back.
Cr. Stansei 1 explained tliat he had seconded the resolution, believing ii would facilitate getting the particulars that wery required.
The Mayor did not think they conld dismiss the present sexton without some reason. He ha<? no fiult to find with either Messrs Jonson or Spring.
The resolution on being put was not carried.
Proposed by Cr McMillan seconded by Cr . Williams, That leave of absence be granted to the clerk for 14 days? from January 13th 1892. — Carried.
Cr Startup desired a little more light about the lighting of the town ; and was leferred to the condition of contract.
The Clerk laid upon the table the valuation roll for the Borough for 1892-93.
Proposed by Cr Startup seconded by Cr Austin, That the Council meet in the future at 2 p.m. — Carried.
O McMillan moved and O Hilliary seconded, That the Charitable Aid given to Mrs Carroll be discontinued from the end of January. - Carried.
Proposed by Cr McMillan seconded by Cr Stansell, That the following be appointed a Public Works Committee, the Mayor and Crs Williams and Austin. — Carried.
Cr Startup proposed and ~*Cr Kiliiary seconded, That Crs Stansell McMillan, and Austin be appointed a Committee to select books for the library \o the amount of £12 — Carried.
The following accounts were passed for payment :—.T. Sullivan, £8 ; 0. Spring, £8 10s 7d ; T. F. Gibson, £6 5s ; Postniastar, 10s ; J. Anderson, progress payment. £75 ; Lyon & Blair, .-£1 3s 9d ; C. Honore, £4 6s lid ; G. Bourke, ids ; W. Smith, £1 3s 4d; do, deposit, £1 ; P. Guerin, £15 10s Bd., £1, do Banging, £5 19s 9d; W. -\lzdorf, progress payment, £18 ; Charitable Aid (Mrs Carroll), £l 5s 7d; Library a /c, H. Blake, £1 10s, do 10s 7d.
