Zanzibar,
♦ Zanzibar is an island lying off the east coast of Africa ; the name is ! used, however, to distinguish all that j territory situated on the main land i 3°N 310305. The island and port ! are the metropolis of the possessions of Imaum of Muscat, and is the chief market for ivory, gum, coral, i and cloves. In 1873 owing to the negotiations of Dr .Kirke, a treaty w;is signod abolishing the slave trade, which had til! then been pretty extensively carried on. In 1875 th
Sultan went further end decreod confiscation c f all slaves brought ;o Zanzibar. The Germans have had •winy little difficulties with the Kul.au, having as lately as 1880 a f?»ht •ithhim. We learn that in Fob- < tP.ry it will be declared a free port, "which is to be attributed to the " influence " oi tho Imperial J3ritisi> East India Company. A free port will make Zanzibar a busy place, and will push the German still farther away. The Zanzibar correspondent of ih London Stand ml states that th« labours of tho British East AlricaCompany for thn suppression of the slave trade are being carried nut with encouraging success. In the Malindi district alone during the first half of this year 112 slaves have been freed; this has been effected by the peaceful and economical policy which the Company adopted last year of allowing slaves to work out their own freedom, slave labour being consistently discouraged. The Company's regulations forbidding any member of any of the tribes under its protection from being held as slaves throughout the sphere of its influence have been very effective in preventing the practice of the selling of children and the purchase of them by the Arabs, once so common in the Giriaraa country.
