Resignation of Mr T. K. Mac Donald, M.H.R.
Quite a sensation was caused in the city during Saturday, when it became known tVr' Mr T. K Macdonald, one of the three Wellington representatives in the House of Representatives, had forwarded to tha Speaker the formal resignation of his seat. The first shock of surprise was succeded by a feeling of very general regret. Mr Macdonald's resolution to resign was not the act of impulse. He warned the Premier a month ago that l.is business affairs might force the step upon him, but it was not until half-past 8 on Saturday morning that he decided to take it, and at 11 he informed the Premier. In another column Mr Macdonald announces and explains the reasons for his retirement, and gracefully thanks these who supported him in his sucpessful election contest. In connection with the affair it may be mentioned that a petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Saturday, on behalf of Thomas Bell/ of Holmes and Bell, Blenheim, praying that Thomas Kennedy Macdonald, auctioneer, might be adjudged a bankrupt. Messrs Brown, Skerrett, and Dean are acting for the petitioner. In view of the vacancy thus created in the representation ,of Wellington, rumour, with her hundred tongues, is already bnsy at work. Many names are mentioned, but it seems to be generally" understood that Mr W. McLean, who stood in the Labour interests in the last election, will, on this occasion, be the Government candidate, and that Mr W. D. Bell, the Mayor-elect will be the Opposition champion. — N.Z.
