Mr Jellicoe in Trouble.

-^ FINED £10, OR 14 DAYS, FOR CONTEMPT OF COURT. NOTICE OF APPEAL. At Palmerston on Saturday, Mr E. G. Jellicoe had to appear before Judge Kettle, to answer a charge of contempt of Court. The plaintiff was summoned to show cause why he should not be fined, or committed to prison for a wilful contempt of Court on the sth May last in sending to Wm Matravers, the clerk of the Court at Palmerston North, while the said clerk was attending town to hear and adjudicate upon a certain bankruptcy petition, the following telegram :— " Wellington, sth May, 1891 - W. Matravers, Esq.", District Court, Palmtrston North re Tapper- make no mistake. The hearing of the petition was by consent taken yesterday and adjourned. No fr<ssn proceeding, will wire pending result of decision. Hold you personally responsible for further irregularities. - Jellicoe." Lengthy affidavits were read and Mr Matravers was examined. Mr Jellicoe then addressed the Court in defence, speaking for about two hours. In answer to the Judge, he said there was nothing to apologise for, and he protested against a matter which was upward of six months' old being now raked up and twisted into contempt of Court. Judge Kettle then read a lengthy judgment, convicting Jellicoe of contempt, and fining him £10 with the alternative of fourteen days' imprisonment in Wanganui gaol. Mr Jellicoe gave no^ce of appeal, and asked that proceedings should be stayed pending th^htaring, which was granted.— N.Z.vimes.
