The death of Lord Lytton recaUs the wonderful knowledge of the Old World which the members of the Diplomatic Service acquire. Lord Lytton entered the service at 18 years of age, and at the age of 56 was appointed Ambassador to France. During the interval he was attached in different capacities to Washington, Florence, Hague, St. Petersburg, Constantinople, Vienna, Copenhagen, Athens, Madrid, and Lisbon. ■ In 1876 he was appointed Viceroy of India, and in 1887 Ambassador at Ptortoi

The late Governor of New South Wales is attempting to obtain a seat upon the London County Council, with the idea of im* proving the present position. He has his work cut out out, as the selling values of the shares in these companies make their united capital total to over 25£ million pounds! It will be a qustion of waiting till their rights expire. The Bank of New Zealand Estates Company, in pursuance of the general policy agreed upon when the company was formed about twelve months ago, have commenced .the realisation of their assets in real earnest. They now advertise that in the Fouth Island they will offer for sale in the early part of next year in Marlborough, Canterbury, and Otago properties to the extent of 838,014 acres of freehold and leasehold land, with 212,000 sheep ; also, cattle, horses, &c.
