A Good Suggestion.
Every hemp miller knows the difficulty there is of making a particular samplo of flax, or perhaps, to be more iiecurate, to define a true Rumple from a single hank. The last rej«>Btions have brought this matt^very prominently forward and we liave been assured by many millers, that now, hemp dressed quite as good as a month ago, is rejeetod, when the earlier was taken. One miller was so certain of this, that when lagt in Wellington he challenged the expert to produce one of the previous bales, when lo ! all the consignment had vanished. Mr Robert Gardner has written us to aay, that though he has been fortunate enough not to have experienced any rejections, yet the question has much exercised him of late, and that he has had a long conversation with Mr Scales, who generally passes the flax, upon the subject. Mr Scales has expressed his willingness to adopt the following pian :— That a bale be selected at random from the fivst consignment of a contract, if passed, and that bale shall be put aside marked by both buyer, and seller, and there remain for reference in store, until the contract be completed. This must be agreed upon by both parties when the contract is made. Mr Gardner remarks that he can see no other way of preventing unpleasantness when rejections occur.
