London. The entire press of St Petersburg oppose the suggestion that an International Conference be established to settle the Dardanelles question. It is rumoured that the King of Roumania will shortly abdicate, The Siecle says that the Grand Duke ot Baden at the close of the German military manoeuvres declared that Germany's sacrifices in the interests of peace had failed to propitiate her neighbours, who were only awaiting a favourable moment to begin the onset. Germany must regard the future with energy and resolution. The time was again near when they would have to unsheath their swords in defence of German independence. This speech has created some sensation in Europe, but it is noticeable that it was not reported in the German papers. Russian explorers are claiming supremacy in Little Pamir and Alicher Pamir, and have excluded the Indian officers sent there to report. In his speech at Cambridge, Mr Morley said the next general election would be a straight iight between the Liberals and Tories. He condemned the persistant occupation of Egypt by the British ; Home Rule should be the first duty of the country. The London and Westminister Bank has been robbed of a parcel of dated bills to the value of a hundred and fifty thousand. It is believed that precautions taken will prevent loss. The Foreign Legations in Chili confirm the news of Balmaeeda's suicide. The French press discredit the report that France and Russia have renewed the demand for the British evacuation of Egypt. The Moscow, Gazette says Russia has guaranteed Turkey against Bri tish aggression. The Daily Telegraph says the huge hive of China is swarming, and the Australian colonies menaced. The United States Governm ent is negotiating with Denmark for the purchase of the Island of St. Thomas in the West Indies.
