The Premier aunounced yesterday afternoon that Mr Perceval, tho member for Chrisfcchurc'i. had been offered and had accepted tho appointment of Agent-General. Thf> appointment would be f">r three years, and Mr Percevel woxi'd proeeei to London in a few weftks. He felt certain, he said that the appointment would give general satisfaction. The Hon. Mr Kollest^n said it was no donbt a departure from ordinary practice to give such an important appointment to so young aniau, ithavinggenerally lieon given to one who had held the nu/k at Jeasfc of a Cabinet Minister. In making such an opfointnafnt the Government ought to rise ab ye all political considerations. They ought to seek the best roan that New Zealand could produce, a man who had had large expeiience, and had iveoived the confidence of the public in tho past. In making those remarks I c wished to say uotliiug derogatory ill regard to Mr Percev.-l, who was a man of iuo_t unexceptionable character, and would c.nry *vith him tho best wisb:-3 of I'o'.h sides of tlie llouse, a'th;ugh, he ropea^od, the duties of such an important office should have been exercised by a man ot more experience They all hoped Mr Perceval would distinguish himself in h's new position, and satisfy their expectations. He h..d their best wishes. (Applause.) -On the motion ol the Premier the Speaker was then ordered to issue a new writ for the city of Christchurch. which has become vacant by the above "hpjii^i«&o v jpt.— N.Z. Times.
