Public Works Statement.
The statement in connection with the Public Works of the rolony was laid before the House in the quietest manner, being simply laid upon the table. There is nothing particularly interesting in it. The amount proposed for expenditure during 1891-2 is £659,196.
There is an available balance of £356,107 for the North Island Main Truck line. Appropriations of £130,000 for railway, £50,000 for roads and £3000 for surveys are asked for.
The House will be asked for £17,000 to be expended between Woodville and Eketahuna. It is intended to construct the railway to Te Aro, and the cost will be taken out of the balance of the railway allocation fund.
The Public Works Estimates include sums of £6000 required to be authorised for the Te Aro railway extension, £1424 for the Manawatu Gorge Bridge; £6000 for the enlargement of Government Printing office to provide additional storage, and accommodation for lithographic and photographic branches ; £2000 for expenditure on the new Mount Cook Prison, Wellington ; £600 for expenditure in connection with the Wellington Postal and Telegraph offices ; £300 for the . Wellington and £10,000 for the Porilg^Lunatic Asylums ; £10,000 tor the Eketa-hune-Woodville railway, and £1000 for the Wellington- Wood ville railway.
