PARLIAMENT.
: HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4. The Speaker took the chair at 2.80 p.m. Mr Saunders, chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, presented the report of that Committee on the claim of the Hon Dr Pollen for arrears of retiring allowance. They reported that Dr Pollen be paid the allowance of £1889 as ' equivalent from the Brd July, 1878, to, the 80th Oetoher, 1876. On the motion of Mr J. Kelly, the report was referred back to the Committee for reconsideration. Captain Russell said he had presented a long petition from Judge Edwards, which brought up important constitutional questions, and as the ordinary committee would probably not have time to enquire into it he asked the Premier whether he would assist him in setting up a Select Committee to deal with the matter. • The Premier said he would consider the question, and give an answer on Monday or Tuesday. The House took the usual dinner adjournment at 5.80' EVENING SITTING. The Honsa re-asgoinbled at 7.80, and immediately wenti into Coin* mittee on the Logi9lative Council Bill, which alter much discussion was read a third'time by 40 to 12 and passed. The Dentists' Act Amendment Bill passed through Committee with amendments providing that a person holding certificate that he is entitled to practice shall be entitled to register, and for the holding of examinations at Wellington, Auckland, Dunedin,' and Christchurch. Ihe University of Otago Council Election Bill passed through Com/^Hittee with several amendments. The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act Amendment Bill (No. 2) went through committee with several amendments. These Bills were read a third time and passed. The House rose at 8 50 a.m.
