Borough Council.
The usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held at the Library buildings yesterday afternoon.
Present— The Mayor (T. Wilson), Crs. McMillan, Nye, Austin, and Williams.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was read : — -
Clerk to Horowhenua County, stating that his Council emphatically protested against the charge for clerical work in connection with V"irokino ferry. His Council was willing to control the ferry without making any charge for management or clerical work.
Same, covering the following resolution :— " That the Council notify the Foxton Borough Council that rent for premises occupied by the ferryman at Wirokino be charged for at the rate of £10 a year, to commence from the time the ferry was taken over by the Borough of Foxton.
Mr Davies, of the .Horowhenua County, who attended, was asked to speak on the matter. The Council went into committee.
A long discussion ensued, and the Mayor moved that. Mr Davies be thanked for his attendance.
The Mayor contended that the award gave the Borough the whole
control of lands, buildings and plant in connection with the Jjpkino ferry. The Council resumed its sitting. The Mayor moved— That the Clerk be instructed to write to the Chairman of the Horowhenua County Council in answer to letter dated 11th August, 1891, enclosing copy of clause 3 of the award made by the Altditdr-General between the Manawatu County Council andtheFoxton Borough, which in the opinion of the Foxton Borough Council vests the building in question, in them. 1 Cr. Austin seconded, and the resolution was put and carried. The further correspondence was read".
From H> Blake, asking permission to erect a room at back door of Library Buildings; at his own expense. P. Honors, for permission to er "fc a verandah by section 108, Mainstreet.
B. Spelman, wanting permission to remove sandridge that is on the pound site and reserve near the A. venue bridge. Also proposing to put sand in the holes in the road opposite new house if Counoil would spend a little money in covering it with black earth.
E. G. Cox, requesting that a sum of £9 8s 6d be placed to the credit of the General Fund Account of the Manawatu County, interest on debt. John L. Morrison, stating that he was informed by Mr R. Elliott, of Otaki (who has lately leased Mr Spiers' mill), that there is a triangular piece of land opposite Spiers ? mill belonging to Borough, and he would be glad to know, the lowest rent that would be taken, and the longest lease given. He required the land to erect a press on for the purpose of baling, and scutching tow from the flaxmills. Leave, was granted to Mr Honore to erect a verandah. Cr. Williams moved, and the Mayor seconded— That ;B. Spelman be allowed to remoTe sandbank, and secure same from sand-drift. Cr Williams said that the matter must be dealt with at once. Mr Spelman proposed to .fill up the hollows by his house and part further along the road. He thought Spelman should undertake to secure the bottom of the hill. The Mayor said that the work should be done under the supervision and inspection of the Council's officers. The resolution was not carried. The Inspector's report^was read. Cr Williams moved an^P(?r Austin seconded, That the >exton's atten- | tion be called to the gorse in the Cemetery and be instructed to remove samo. - Carried. It was proposed by Cr Williams and seconded by Cr McMillan, That Mr Blake be allowed to erect a leanto outside his residence at the Library. No stove to be used. Ur Austin thought it would be necessary that the building bo left as the property of the Library. ilia Mayor thought the motion was ot much importance as we permitted an employee improving our property which might be incon.. venienfc hereafter. . Tb.9 motion was declared lost on the voices, and on a division being called, Crs Williams and MoMillan voted with the ayes, and Crs Austin, Nye and the Mayor againsfr. The motion was therefore not carried. Cr McMillan proposed and Cr Williams seconded, That newspaper files be purchased for the use of the Library and that all papers .be filed for at ieast one month.-^-CarrieJ.
