The Speaker took the chair at 2.30 p.m. A very angry discussion took place on the Hon Mr Richardson challenging the Minister of Lands to with-, draw or support a statement he had made the previous night, and which resulted in the Government shirking the question, leaving the Hon Mr Eiehardson to give notice ol a committee to be appointed. The discussion produced a very heated argument, aud in the course of which the Hon Mr Bryce said that the Premier " ought to he ashamed." M The Premier demanded: a withdrawal, (0| which Mr Bryce refused, and after a lengthy discussion, during which Mr Bryce retired, a resolution proposed by Mr Rees, "That this House regrets the words taken down wert used by the hon member for Waikato, although qualified as they were by the subsequent words used by the hon member," was carried. Mr Bryce then entered and explained that he had not been allowed to finish the sentence with the words " in relying on a technicality to prevent inquiry into a disgraceful charge against a member of the House." He considered the Government action as a peculiar reward for his assistance during the session. He concluded by saying, " After I sleep upon it, and not before, I shall consider my own position, but I regard this censure as a most grave thing to me, and I shall, with your permission, "leave the House now. Whether T enter it again will be a. matter, for my own consideration." The announcement by the Speaker that the Land and Income Tax Assessment Bill had been passed by the Legislative Council without amendment was received witll" applause.
