Public Meeting.

On Thursday evening a very good representative gathering of those who were interested in obtaining a resi--1 dent medical man for the district, assembled at Whyte's hojfcei,. ;in response to the advertisement issued V by the Committee elected at the last 1 general meeting. ■■■■■■.[ Mr W. p. Rhodes was elected ; to to the chair. ... , : In the discussion which ensued Mr Woodham, the chairman of, the Committee reported the result of the canvasser's efforts, showing ..tjiat only ,£B7 ,in promises, had been obtained. It was. thought that thi» sum was not half what ought ' to 1 have been obtained, and that some ' who were the heads of large families had.putthe collector off with pro- ; mises of too small an amount. It ' was also thought that many whose s names did not appear on the list at all, would subscribe if the matter ' was brought more prominently under 1 their notice. Mr T. P. Williams therefore moved " That a committee consisting of Messrs Rhodes, Stansell and the mover, be formed, to canvass ! . the district afresh." 'Mr Stansell . haying seconded the same, it. 1 was . put and carried. ; ■ It ,was undei'stood that this committee would report: to another meeting 'that day week. The meml?ersi also kindly undertook to carry round another list to enable all desirous of getting a doctor, to subscribe a small amount towards the unadvoidr able' expenses of advertising and telegraphing. Those in the room I contributed one shilling each to find the 'balance required to pay the canvasser for the time he was employed, , It was thought that the public would have no desire that all thepreliminary expensesshould.be borne by those who attended the meeting!) and that therefore they would gladly embrace a chance to ; pay .their share;. . The meeting appreciated the action of Mr Stansell in placing one of his comfortable i aitting-'rooms at (their disposal. With the usual vote of thanks to the chair, the meeting broke up. '
