Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, JULY 18, 1891. Only to be Expeoted.

» » „ The health ot ouv public men ie always a matter of importance to thf public. We are aware that during the recess the Defence Minister sacrificed hia comfort, in travelling over the colony to secure votes for the Government. . This necessitated a prolonged course of banquettings. whiph is bound to tell upon the strongest, and its havoc is now ' shown in the condition of mind it has left its victim. On Wednesday our member, Mr J. G. Wilson, a^ske'd the Defence Minister if he would reconsider his decision and accept the Foxton corps ? Mr Wilson explained 3 to Mr Seddon that he understood he j had refused to advise the Governor , to accept such a corps as the town . was an " isolated place." Mr Seddon j replied " that there were a great many 3 corps in the district and that he B could not accept any more. Morefc over, Totara was not an "isolated place," containing as it did the Borough of Boss, the centre of a large and populous district." It was in this Borough, that the beginning of those series of banquets was made, and it appears to have left an impression on Mr Seddon's mind that , it was a most wonderful and flourishing centre. Mr Wilson, however, did his best to get the unfqrtunate , man to his right mind, by.(r ising and, stating that it was correct that Totara was in the Ross district, but as the Borough of Ross had only a population of 860, and Foxton had 1250, "no fellah" could possibly understand the twist that had been created in the views held by the Minister. It was hopeless, Mr ' Seddon still preferring to believe that 860 people in Ross represent a greater number than 1250 people in I Foxton. We trust the Minister will ' be careful to refrain from another such series of banquets, or >he may 1 think he is Colonial Treasurer and ■ thus make matters worse than they : now are.
