The Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, JULY 4,-1891. Tipperary.
New Tipperary is offered fov sale, co says the cablegrams.. What a ; history of Irish rashness does this fact proclaim, In the year I^9o the tenants of one of the large landlords in Tipperary refused to pay rent, not from any dispute as to values, but simply as evidence af their sympathy with tenants on adjoining estates. Mr Smith Barry defended himself and, had to proceed to evict. From reports, then published, it was shown that tenants who had laid out th'eii 1 all upon improvement of the properties rented, allowed everything to be sacrificed for feeling. The Parnell. party spent a sum of £29,000 in building a new Tipperary, which consisted of a mart, a long building with a glass ro6f, divided into 24 stalls for evicted shopkeepers ; and sbme 40 houses and shops. At the other end of the old town tho Party built 27 cottages. A few weeks ago; we learnt that the evicted tenants were clearing out of the new town and were paying up arrears of rent and returning to their old premises,, and now we learn Now Tipperary is for sale ! The fall of the town is a monument to the fall of the Leader. The town opened with much beating of drums on Saturday, the 12tli April, 1890, is offered for ; sale in June, 1891. The evicted tenants fund has to suffer the loss.
