Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 1891. Some Public Papers.
Directly following the opening of Parliament oame the large number of papers ordered by Statute or oomrnand to be laid on the table of the Fouse. The Dunedin Hospital Inquiry Commission furnish a report of 269 pages, giving the evidence of all the witnesses examined in full. We do not know what the actual cost of the Commission has been, but the approximate oost of printing the report is stated to bs £174 15s. Dr Hector and Mr Carew, the Resident Magistrate at Dunedin, were the Commissioners. In subsfcanc? they find that the'complainb of the Hasp'tal's insanitary condition is well founded, and that though all the defects are capable of rectification there is an inherent objection to the present site in the. fact of its being situated on low ground. That the form of the building has caused defective ventilation. Much has beyn done towards an improvement in nursing, but the chief requirement is a nurse's home. The evidence shows a complete unanimity as to the need of a new Hospital. The dangers that need immediate remedy arise from the defects in the ventilation and closet arrangements, and the position of the kitchen. The Commissioners laid no blame on the Trustees. If the decision is to improve the present building the Commissioners point out how this could be done, at an expenditure qf some £12,000, but of which amount the Trustees have only some £5000. It appears that the complaint made has been fully substantiated,, and that the Dunedinites will haveto consider the ways and means for providing the funds for the urgently needed additions, and, within a short period, the erection of a new Hospital.
