The Census.
ALARMING LOSS. The population of the Colony, exclusive of Maoris, has not yet been exactly arrived at, but according to the preliminary densus returns it may, we understand, be stated at 628,288. This is about 40,000 more than in 1886. Now, the excess of births over deaths during the past five years amounts to 64,168. We have, therefore, lost in population not only an equivalent to all our Immigration, but also 20,000 oi our natural increase. The figures (given subject to revision, certain information having been given by wire and a few small things being uncertain) are as follows : — POPULATION.
