Horowhenua Jockey Club.
• The first meeting under the auspices of the above Club took place on the new course at Otaki yesterday. The weather was all that could be desired, and the attendance very large. About £2000 went through the machine, and some fair dividends were paid. Much" dissatisfaction was expressed. at the numbers on the machine, in the Second Hurdle Eace, not corresponding with those on the ' official card. The following are the results of the various events : — 1 Trial Handieap^-Rahni, i ; Eou- i lette, 2 ; Oleander, 3. This race i resulted in a splendid finish between the placed horses, Eoulette only getting done by the shortest of heads, * half a length separating second and c
third horses. Dividend £13 7s. Stewards' Handicap— Deoeption, 1 ; Omaha, 2 ; Le Nord, 3, Only the three started. Won in the commonest of canters. Dividend, £1 18s. First Hurdle Race — Marksman, 1 ; Roger, 2 ; Acolyte, 3. Lady Harrison, Honest John, and Johnnie also started. Honest John led on sufferance for a mile and a quarter, when Marksman went to the front, followed closely by Acolyte. Coming to the last fence Roger moved up to his horses, but Marksman drew away and won with a bit up his sleeve, a good race between Roger and Acolyte for second honours. Dividend, £4 Is. Horowhenua Cvp — Oleander, 1 ; Deception, 2 ; Omaha, 3. Wakapua, Lochinvar, and The Ark also started. Lodore and Wainanga were scratched. From a good start Wakapua and Deception were first to move, and cut out the running locked together for a mile and a quarter, but at this stage Wakapua had had enough and fell baok beaten. Omaha and Oleander then made a forward movement, and from this out it was a good race. When fairly in the straight all the boys were at work, and it looked as though the favourite, Deoeption, would last the longest. Three strides from home Oleander got her head in front, and won by by half a length: from Deception, Omaha being two lengths away third. Dividend, £11 7s. . Second Hurdles — Marksman, list 111 b, 1 ; Melos, 9st 71b, 2 ; Roger, list 131 b, 3. Disturbance, Amina, Elaine, Akeake and Honest John also started.
