Manukau.

♦ — — (from our own correspondent.) Matters are generally very quiet just at present. The buildings in course of erection are nearing completion, and the candidates for licenses are looking forward to the meeting of the Licensing Bench, when their fate will be decided. The public school has passed through the usual ordeal of examination. The Inspector was Mr Fleming who came as a new man to this district. The results must prove i very satisfactory to the teachers, considering that the exam was held nearly 2 months earlier than usual. In the standard classes there were 52 presented, 2 were absent, 3 excepted, 3 failed and 44 passed. In his remarks in the Log Book the Inspector stated that most of the work was exceptionally good. Mr Riley, director of the Wellington School of Design, also visited the school to inspect the drawing, and expressed himself well pleased with the work presented. The much- vexed cemetei'y question came before the Council at its last meeting, when it was decided to make an offer to Ah Chee for a portion of his ground. If that is secured I think all parties will be satisfied. A movement is on foot to establish an Oddfellows' Lodge Ujt the township. The need of a medical man, capable of working the district, is much felt. As there is at present only one doctor between Palnierston and Wellington there should be a good opening for an energetic man.
