(TO THE EDITOR OF THE MANAWATU HERALD.)
Sir, — I heard a piece of news the other day, which will interest the people of Foxton at this juncture. It is that Messrs Nelson Bros., are proposing to ship their frozen mutton from Woodville at Poxton instead of sending it to Wellington or Napier. They say that if it can be done from Wangamri there is no reason why it should not be done from Foxton. Indeed there is much more reason why it can be done from your port for in case of unfavourable weather, Kapiti is only an hour or two's steam, and shelter from any weather can be had, and the steamers containing the mutton could ply from Foxton there with ease. . If such were done there is no reason why the Longburn mutton should not go in a similar way and that, would mean a very large, quantity of shipping trade to swell the trade of your town. I can myself see no reason why this should not be done, perhaps if sufficient inducement were held out a small steamer with cool chambers could be kept for the trade of the two ports Wanganui and Foxton. . Trusting the proposal will be out. — I am &c, James Gr. Wilson.
