Land Board.
« An adjourned meeting of the Land Board was held to-day (Thursday). Present — Messrs J. W. A. Marchant, (Commissioner), A. W. Hogg, M.H. R., D. H. Macarthur, M.H.R., W. W. McCardle, and W. A. Fitzherbert. Titles were granted the following selectors : — J. J. Esson, section 16, Levin. The Board decided not to grant a title to J. Holmes, section 6,* Levin, j as improvements had not been done. It was resolved to call upon a number of selectors in various parts of the district to furnish explanations as to the reason why they had allowed other persons to occupy their holdings in contravention of the provisions of the Land Act. The Board at its meeting today, received replies from three ot those who were written to, and arrived at decisions in regard to them : — The Commissioner submitted a further schedule of selectors who have been reported by the Ranger to have evaded the conditions of the Act, and it was resolved in the instances of J. W. Gower and other members of the family to ask for an explanation pending an enquiry. The issue of titles was consequently postponed. In the case of T. Jakes it was decided to let the transfer to J. Howell proceed, but Messrs P. .L. Seager, C. V. Jenkins, and C. W. Borreson were called upon to explain pending an inquiry. The Commissioner stated that although there were over 1000 settlers on the West Coast, Mr Landius, Crown Lands Ranger, had informed him that he had been unable to discover more two or three cases of supposed dummyism beyond those which the Board have previously had in view. The whole of the coast settlements were in a fine healthy condition, and progressing very satisfactorily. — Post.
