THE LICENSING QUESTION.
(to the editor of the manawatu herald.) Sir, — According to Mr A. Honore's senr. letter, certain ratepayers voted for an increase of grog shops, as he poetically terms them, and he pities the men engaged in them, and I think they deserve to be pitied. The motives, he states, that actuated the ratepayers who voted for an increase, which I assume are the 1.0.G.T.5, to vote for an increase of grog- ships are, I believe, quite correct, namely, oron move g.s.'s and cause the ruin of all of then:. 1 dare say the 1.0.G.T.'s consider it part of iheir princplo (if they have I any) to ruin all that are opposed to their way of thinking. If that is a speciniou of tlieir Chris ianity (if they have any) I hope I shall never try to emulate thfm. Does it not occur to you as strange that in all parts of New Zealand the I O.G T.s have tried their Lest to decrease the nnmber of grog shops, excepting in Foxton. I suppose the. Foxton 1.0.G.T.'s are a more enlightened bedy than the rest of New Zealand, or do they act contrary to what they profess ? I can quite understand our worthy Town Clerk, who acted as Returning Officer, being so anxious for an increase of grog shops, as he would likely get a chance of having his salary increased, again, and that to some people is of more consequence than carrying out what they profess. — I am, &c, A Sinner but kot a Hypocrite. Foxton, 14th May, 1891.
