Further India.
♦ Yeak by year the possessions of Great Britain extend, by conquest or by treaty. The last territory of India has been consolidated under English rule, and extended over Assam. It is but a very short time since Upper Burmah was annexed, leaving a number !of small territories in the north ! and south of it, independent. Now I the rising at Munipur, which originated as a revolt against the ruler of
that State, and into which the English have been dragged at his inter- ' cession, may cause the further annexation of the small northern independent States. This would bring the boundaries of Further ; India to the borders of China. If the , Shan States are going to join cause with Munipur, their fete will be likewise, and then Further India will be extended to Siam. Thus a few years will probably witness the furthest extension of India, and its history will be one of the most interesting records of expansion from the sheer necessity of preserving law and order.
