THE REPORTED MASSACRE. As we foreshadowed a great deal, out of a very little, was made of the slight reverse at Munipur. Four : hundred and seventy Ghoorkas and r eight officiers do not appear to have j been massacred, fortunately, as the * later cablegrams state that Messrs Quinton (Chief Commissioner of Assam) and Grimwood (British Beak, dent at Manipur) and Colonel Skene are prisoners. Mrs Grimwood, three officers, and fifteen more Ghoorkas are reported to have escaped. The troops were attacked because the J Natives feared annexation. ~- It appears that an attempt was being made to arrest the usurper/ Jobraj, to which great resistance; was offered. The expedition theni retreated to the Residency, which^ was shelled by the rebels, and Commissioner Quinton and four other Britishers were taken prisoners while parleying. After the cartridges gave out the expedition fought its way across the

hill until a junction was made wit! Captain Crowley, who was at th head of 200 of the 43rd Bengalese. Captain Crowley's column is safe and it is believed all the missis officers are alive.
