(our own correspondent). Owing to the absence of anything like decent weather, I am sorry to say that our burns about here are hardly what one might term first class. Mr Engel's bush though well exposed has not done so well as expected. Also Mesars Gardner's and Oodlin's. Last Saturday a meeting was held in the schoolhouse, to consider the advisability of constructing a new road to the river from the township, in place of the present road, which owing to a creek that has been tampered with had made sad havoc with the Eoad Board's exchequer. After some little discussion in which some of our local statesmen were quiet conspicuous, it was resolved to call for competitive designs as to the best method of dealing with the creek, and to still maintain the present road. Our district as perhaps you are aware, is fast becoming important, Large areas of land have been taken up within this last year or so, and several hundreds of acres have been fallen and grassed. I was sorry to see that Mr Potts of Kereru has also been unfortunate in burning. He has shown a great deal of pluck and enterprise in bush work &c, and a poor burn is not much recompense for all the energy displayed. The school is now in full swing, under the mastership of Mr Voysey and though the distance for the pupils to traverse in order to study, in some cases is considerable, the roll shows a very good average attendance. I must not forget to remind you that at certain times throughout the year, the lads and lasses here indulge in a dance now and then. The school again comes in very handy. Though the dance held last week was hardly a success from a monetary'point of view. Still some ten or twelve couples enjoyed a turn of the light fantastic. I won't mention anything concerning 'Belles or Beaux ' this time. We also possess a Cricket Club, which although low in funds, has so far given a very good account of itself, beating the Paikakariki Club here a fortnight ago. In the return match luck was against them, Paikakariki winning by some nine wickets, However the trip down for the boys was a most enjoyable one, the opposing team being very hospitable. The return or final me&jh has yet to be played, so &ere is a chance to recover lost laurels.
