Shannon.
— _+. On Saturday afternoon a public meeting was held in the School-house Shannon, to consider the advisability of constructing the new road, Brycestreet, towards the Manawatu river. The abandoning the present river road from the township down to the intersection of the proposed new road, and to generally consider the drainage scheme. A very fair attendance was present Mr Kebbell, the chairman of the i County also being there. Mr John Davies, the Chairman of the Wirikino Road Board presided, and in opening the proceedings said that the questions were those of much interest locally. The proposal to abandon the present river road was his, and not suggested by any one interested in the new road. However since he had been over the road that day he saw that the proposal would not be satisfactory, as it would cost too much to form Bryce-street. With regard to the drainage scheme, he understood that only one settler stood out, and he could inform them that this would matter little, as the board had power to take what land was wanted, under the Public Works Acts, and the compensation would be ascertained by estimating how much damage, by loss of land, the objector had suffered, and by how much his property had been, on the other hand improved, by drainage. He pointed out that an effectual drainage scheme would cost about -2300 or £400, and if a loan was obtained the interest would only be some £15 to £20 a year, which would be paid out of revenue, leaving the balance free for other roads. Up to now, the river road had absorbed
their whole available revenue, some £100 a year. It would be for the meeting to determine which they thought most to their advantage. Many spoke, also asked questions, but bearing on the hairman's opeti* ing remarks are riot necessary to re port. . , - —— --■' It was resolved that the meeting m wov-ld no.t go into the dnestion of forming Bryde-street, fcha w'biilri go* ; into that relating to draining. After farther discussion, it was resolved that tho Wirokino Road Board be requested to prepare plans, with levels, showing how the drainage could be effected. 'the meeting clajact^ith a vote of thanks to the Chairman.
