About 8 o'clock me>Anchor Line steamer Charles Edwajd left for Wanganui, and was just in the entrance, between the Fifeshire Rook and the Boulder Bank, when a small cutter belonging to Mr Harley, laden with 12 tons i of coal from; Motupipi, was entering:, coining with the tide and using sweeps. She rhad three men aboard, namely, • Westrupp (master) and two men named Frank Bailey and Torn Nailder. When the steamer was a chain and a-half distant they all three sang out, and heard the order given immediately to back her. hard* F full speed astevftf> The steamer- icjLml on, however, striking the cutter on the quarter. Bailey and Nailder managed to scramble on board her, but Westrupp they believed, jumped 'overboard though he could not swun. His cries were heard for some, minutes after, and a boat was lowered, but owing to the thickness of ; the -fog he could not be seen, and is given, up as drowned. Both vessels had all their lights burning. Immediately behind the cutter the s.s. Grafton was com* ing with the tida, under command of the pilot, but whim the accident occurred she went astern and went outside again and is still out.-Ty^ess Association.
