Manawatu Rowing Club.

» * On Tuesday afternoon another set of heats were rowed off, in conn,ee» tion with the Captain's dip, The first heat between MoMillan and J. Symons proved a very interesting one, resulting in a dead heat. The Course was the usual one, , from a little above the Maori pah, to the lower end of the wharf. There was a good stream running, which favoured the time men. J. Symona , had to give McMillan ten seconds ' start which he made full use of, by . getting nearly ten lengths ahead. This was maintained for some distance when McMillan pulled fair \ into a boat moored in the stream carrying away a rowlock of the stationary boat, and getting his sculi , well under it. During the time it \ took to clear the boat Symons had \ caught up and got passed nearly four lengths, and then to the post was witnessed a capital struggle, ' McMillan putting his back into bis work and gaining fast upon his opponent, when the judge gave a dead heat. The club so little expected any exciting finishes that they neglected to erect a flag opposite the wharf, and the judge, Mr Little, took a cabbage tree, a little further down the river. This of course was against the inside boat, and has caused many to think that McMillan had the race. Of course the judge's . decision must be upheld. The next heats were not so interesting being more in the nature of processions. P. Curtis defeated C. Symons, and W. Cook defeated Cowles.
