London. Watson and Sons, merchants, of London and Melbourne, have failed. Their liabilities are £130,000, but assets are available to a very considerate amount. The news of the failure of Watson and Sons, merchants, has created a sensation in business circles in Melbourne. The failure, is . believed to be' due to bad debts contracted in Melbourne. These have boen accruing since the burst of the land boom, and they were considerably increased by the late strike. The attempt to affect a compromise between the United Labour Connoil and the Shipping Federation has failed, the latter virtually insisting on au unconditional surrender by those on strike. The Union is ; licensed at the action of Federation, and declare that the' proposals of the 13th in.st, in which it was agreed that no preference was to be given to non-Union men have not been observed. The Union leaders further state that if the Federation on Monday insists on a general acceptance of the Federation ticket, a lockout is inevitable, and that it will be followed by a colossal 'strike of the maritime trades. .. ■ Mr Justin Macarthy is sending Messrs T.
