The Truth About "United Ireland."

This is the history of United Ireland. Originally the shareholders stood as follows : — Egan, 287 ; Parnell, 247; Dr Kenny, 10; Biggar, 10; W. O'Brien, 2; Justin McCarthy, 2 ; D. Lahor, 2. Subsequently a further issue was made to Egan, which gave him a majority of the total shares. Nobody seems to have jmid any cash for these shares. When Egan was appointed Minister to Chili he transferred his shares to Davit. Although registered as a company, no legal formalities were complied with. No directors were elected and so the seven shareholders originally forming the .company considered themselves its directors. On Biggar's death the number of shareholders was reduced below the statuory number even and nothing was done to remedy this. Under these circumstances, Wilham O'Brien became editor, and praotically proprietor, bringing out the paper at his risk and peril, Parnell expressly repudiating all personal risk and peril. Can anything (allowing that Mr Parnell is responsible for his actions) he conceived more mean than for him to have burst into the office, turned out O'Brien's hcum teneru, and laid hold of the presses and type, with a view to convert the newspaper into an organ to puff himself, when O'Brien was liable to be put in prison if he landed in Ireland, and therefore could not defend his property ?— - Truth.
