Manawatu County Council.
• The usual monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held at the County office, Sanson, yesterday, at 11 a.m. Present — C. Y. Ransome (chairman), Crs. McKenzie, F. Robinson and T. Mitchell. Crs. Masters and Saxon arrived late. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was read : — Inwards. From C. N. Lasenby, asking if he could fall road lines in Campbelltown. From butchers, asking for slaughtering licenses. From Mr Dunning, re cutting thistles on the Orona Bridge road. From J. G. Wilson, re repairing road leading to his woolshed. From Rangitikei County Council, asking for copy of by-laws respecting weights allowed to pass over bridges in the County. From Manchester Road Board, asking to join in erecting a bridge
over the Oroua Eiver at Aorani, mentioning the estimated cost to be £3000, and that it be divided into four parts, between the Feilding Borough Council, the Manawatu ana Manchester Road Boards, and the - Manawatu County. j^f •-* From Manawatu Roav Board, stating that the Board objected to joining in erecting a bridge at Aorangi, and if forced to contribute* Would protect themselves by erecting a toll gate. . „. _.-,.,-» From F. Lucinsky, applying for ' assistance for clearing gorse which was growing on the road previous to his occupation of the land. From C. B. Hankey, re clearing gorse along railway 4ine. From Station-master, Foxton, re ledger account. From D. M. Brooks, re repairs to the Wallaby. treasurer's bhport. The general Banking account was overdrawn £206 Is 6d. The following separate districts were in credit : — Sandon, £51 18s sd; Mount Stewart, £212 11s sd ; Waitohi, £182 18s Gd; Campbell, £109 19s 8d ; Carnarvon, £179 6s 9d ; Kawakawa, £13 8s Id ; A wahou, £104 16s lOd. The following resolutions were passed : — Proposed by Cr Eobinson, seconded by Cr Ransom, That the application of C. N. Lasenby to fall road lines in Campbelltown be agreed to — Carried. Proposed by Cr Robinson, seconded by Cr. McKenzie, That slaughterhouse licenses be granted to the Foxton Butchering Company, A. S. Easton, H. P. Meyers, Henry Pickering, F. S. Bassett, and G. E. Pike.— Carried. Re Lucinsky's application the Chairman thought they could hardly make him any allowance. Cr Robinson pointed out that the portion cut : - was originally^ an old fence line pla(^dbp|hell|^a Downs estate. ''■> .'- : 'H?'' -'■[■.'■' "s£/"" '" Cr Mitchell thought 'it would be expensive to make any concession. Cr McKenzie thought it had better be grubbed up at the cost of the Council. The matter was left in abeyance. Re Bray's report on the Tramway it was decided to send Mr Brooks a copy, it was Proposed by Cr« McKenzie, seconded by Cr Ransome — That a copy of the Engineer's report on the Tramway be sent to Mr D. M. Brooks, and that he be requested to attend at < once to works pointed out &V heces- ■ sary by the engineer. i Carried. It was decided to ask .the Rangitikei County Council to paJFa by-law to prevent horses trotting over the Rangitikei bridge. : /""" Re Mr Dunning's letter; the dE&vman pointed out that there was no- . thing so much to the credit ot the district as he. had represented, as certain monies had been paid away p Proposed by Cr McKenzie, seconded by Cr Robinson — That the Chairman be authorised to insure the i" Union Insurance Office for the sum of £300. Carried. Re application from Manohestdr Road Board. The Chairman said that the bridge was close on the boundary of the County, over the. Oroua river by the railway bridge at Feilding. <"r Saxton said the County had ." only twenty or thirty chains" of road near the bridge. He could not see what benefit it would be to the County. There is a bridge 2 . miles above the railway bridge and one at Awahuri. Cr Masters wished to know the proportion of cost asked for. The Chairman said, one-fourth, Proposed by Cr Ranson seconded by Cr Mackenzie, That seeing the proposed bridge at Aorangi N, Feildis of no benefit to this council, the Council objects to contribute any thing to the cost. — Carried. . Cr Mitchell said those using the Shannon ferry found it very venient, there being no yards. Mr Wilson had spoken to hiri^ ajid he brought the matter up. He said the ferries were not put to make a profit. He proposed and Cr Robinson seconded, That the overseer be instructed to prepare plans &c for yards at Shannon ferry by next meeting of this Council.— Carried. Cr McKenzie in the matter of the letter from the Horowhenua Council considered that they ought to get all particulars as there appeared no papers in the office to substatitate the claim — He moved, That the "* Chairman of the Horowhenua County Council be informed that so far this Council has been unable to find anything among the books and papers at this office authorising in any way the expenditure of the sum claimed or any part of it, and to request the Chairman of the Horowhenua County Council to^te good enough to forward copy of a'l cor- - respondence or agreements, if any, which he may have in his office relative to the claim. — Carried.' ~ Cr Saxon wanted some metalling on the road as far as the money in hand will allow. He moved, That tenders be called for metalling 50 chains of road between Mount / Stewart, and Mount Biggs, continuation of metal now done near gravel; * pit at Mt. Proposed by Cr Ranson seconded by Or Robinson, That tenders be called for a wash-out at Sanson the same to be in by next meeting ol the Council. — Carried. Proposed by Cr McKenzie seconded by Cr Hammond, That notice be sent to Messrs J. H. Andrews & Co., that if they do not attend at the County office Sanson on or before the 18th inst to sign their contract their deposit will be foreeted. — Carried. Proposed by Cr McKenzie seconded by Cr Hammond, That in the event of Messrs Anderson & Co., failing to sign their contract on or before the 18th instant the work be offered to the next lowest tenderer — Carried. The overseer's report was read and considered. Cr McKenzie said that the gorse had only been partially cut on the road, not even to the centre of the road. Cr McKenzie proposed, and Cr Hammond seconded, That the overseer be authorised to extend the metalling contract on Rosina's road ten chains — Carried. Proposed by Cr Ransom, seconded by Cr Robinson, That tenders be called for about 35 chains on Bank's line; lenders to be in by noon of next meeting of the Council — Carried. Cr Ransom moved without remark rind ( r Robinson seconded That the Council takes the necessary steps to raise a loan of £1750 under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act ; £1100 to be spent in forming and' metalling the CampbelltownLongburn road, and \ share of constructing bridge ; £250 to be used in meialling unfinished portion of Taipo Awahuri road ; £400 to be spent in /metalling Sandon-Carnarvon road ; The special rate to provide interest, and sinking fund to be levied over the'Campbell, Waitohi. Carnarvon, and Kawa Kawa ridings— Carried. Proposed by Or McKenzie, seconded by Cr Robinson, That the overseer be instructed to inspect the Oroua Bridge road, and report at next meeting ; also to do any necessary repairs —Carried. Cr Mitohell suggested that whilst the surveyors were surveying the deviation of the road to Mr Gardner's . It would be advis able if an exohange (which Mr Wilson was agreeable to) was made for the road which con* neoted the Kuri Kuri road with the Moutoa road. Upon plans being inspeoted the Council were of the same opinion and Cr MoKenzie moved and Cr Robinson seconded, That Cr Mitchell be authorised to arrange with Mr J. W. Stewart for the suggested deviation of the Kuri Kuri road — Carried. The following accounts were passed foi payment :—E. G.
