CONDENSED CABLEGRAMS
London. The Convocation of Oxford University has granted the University of 1 Adelaide the privileges conferred ! under the Colonial and London Uni--1 versity Statue. j It is proposed that a conference ' shall be held in May between repre- | sentatives of Canada and Australia, on the question of the Pacific cable. During the debate on the Eeligious Disabilities Removal Bill, Mr W. H. Smith pointed out that in the event of Home Rule being granted to Ireland the Viceroy would be the only link connecting the country with the Throne, and it was essential that he should be a Protestant, . as the Catholics regarded allegiance as being due to the Pope before the Queen. It is, however, considered certain in political circles that the measure will pass later on. Mr Justin Macarthy promises to make known the terms of settlement with Mr Parnell on 12th February. The Standard says that Mr Gladstone will also shortly reveal the pledges he has given with regard to Home Rule. It is reported that the concessions promised by Mr Gladstone to the Home Rule party in respect to the settlement of the land and control of the police in Ireland are considered satisfactory by Messrs O'Brien, Dillon, and Macarthy, but Mr Parnell is claiming control of the militia. The Joint Dock Committee has abandoned the discharge of shipping leaving the ship-owners to fight the dockers themselves. In order to prevent a block it will be necessary to organise a loading and unloading staff. Two thousand men will be required for ordinary needs. A general strike has taken place at Cardiff, and has paralysed trade. The dockers at Bute intend to prosecute the coalheavers for alleged breach of contract. The shipowners in Cardiff declare that they will lay up their vessels for twelve months rather than surrender their freedom in selection of crews. Frozen lamb, Canterbury, s£d.
