A Rough Trip.
From Sydney, information has been received that the ship Deveron had put into that port under peculiar circumstances. Some time ago she left Freemantle, Western Australia for Howland island, one of the Central Polynesian Sporades, to load guano. The distance would be roughly 4500 miles, and her course would be along the south coast of Australia, and thence northward past the Fiji islands, the Friendly islands, Union island and the Phoenix islands and past the equator to Howland island. She ■would have had to traverse very uearly the direct route from Auckland to Hawaii, only after crossing the line, to bear about 500 miles to the westward. The greater part of her voyage should have been through tranquil seas and bright skys, but we learn that on the voyage to Howland she met with adverse weather, and her passage occupied the lengthened period of 74 days. On arrival at the island, the laying off was attendended with great danger, and the officers and men signed a round robin to the captain requesting him to leave with the ship. Finding himself in an awkard position, the captain was forced to accede to the request of the crew, and the vessel was headed for Auckland, but not without a protest from the captain. On the way to Auckland the Deveron again fell in with bad weather, and * she was unable to make that port the captain went on to Sydney, where he arrived after a passage of 24 days. It is the intention of the captain to prosecute the crew on a charge of mutiny.
