By the courtesy of Messrs McMillan, Rhodes & Co we are able to give our readers the latest report from Messrs John Griffen & Son, brokers, of London, under date of 23rd December, 1890 : — Hemp — Our market during the past fortnight has ruled irregular, with the exception of good and fine dressed qualities of New Zealand, and being relatively scare and dearer. Manilla, owing to the rise in exchange, has latterly improved in / value, and the total receipts this year, to the 22nd inst., are 519,000 bales, and the total out-turn is estimated at 580,000 bales. New Zealand— Only the moderate quantity of 951 bales have arrived ex " Waimate," but there has been no general demand experienced, buyers having partly purchased in anticipation of orders, on the other hand, good and fine dressed qualities being proportionately scarce j have commanded more attention at some improvement. Qualities below good fair have ruled irregular in value, and on the average about 10s per ton cheaper. Privately, about 400 bales ex sales since sold at full rates. At auction 1488 bales offered.

552 sold. Wellingtan— Dull, pale brownish, rather short staple, harsh, £19 per ton, to good pale fairly dressed and soft, £25 per ton. Lyttelton — Good pale and slight pale brownish, fairly soft and dressed, £27 ss. New Zealand hemp lashings, 20 coils offered and sold ; made up from tow, uneven make, £9 per ton. Imports to 80th November — 1890, 11,414 tons ; 1889, 6504 tons. Deliveries in 1890, 8,8(57 tons ; 1889, s\BBB tons. Stock in 1890, 8590 tons ; 1889, 920 tons. Manhxa — The receipts there have, during'the past few weeks, been heavy, but owing to the rise in exchange, the cablegrams report higher prices. Last week's business was reported in fair current to arrive, c. f. and i., £89 10s to £40, but £41 per ton is now the quotation. Imports to 80th November— lß9o, ss,4B6 bales. Deliveries—lß9o, 59"215 bales. Stock —1890, 8262 bales. Sisait— Holders do not press sales, but privately few transactions are recorded.
