Sir, in your leader of Jan, 29th, on Flax, and Dr Hector and other gentlemen's experiments on flax, you have taken it for granted that I have Been Dr Hector's book, and that I got hints from it. Now, sir, I just want simple justice done me. I have never seen this book, neither have I heard of those other gentlemen you mention, except Dr Huttqn, as a Geologist, if it is the same. I am hot indebted to a soul on earth for the simplest hint on the matter ; it is my own working out from beginning to end. Ido not want to make a boast of it, as there have been times when I should have been heartily glad of a hint from anybody, when I nave been sorely perplexed ; but so far I have not had it. My experiments on flax commenced in Fa tea some years ago; I ■.^hen .succeeded to some extent in getting it tar, but not sufficiently. I may tell jgui-pa^of the process :— The flax was put in tanks* direct from the stripper, packed in very tight. It remains in for three days, sometimes three days and a half. It was then taken out and washed, and put to bleach. Of course I put a mixture in the water. The flax comes out soft, and when bleaohed it was nice and white.
